An Interim: What are the top two?

Hi readers. Here we are, on the cusp on the Teens, saying goodbye (and good riddance) to our beloved aughts. Any idea what the top two selections might be? What are the two most prominent features of the decade not yet mentioned? I'd be curious to hear what you think. Of course, I know what they are but then again....I'm writing the thing! The correct guess gets....my undying respect!

  2. I had been going to say 9/11, but you took that one away. I'm agreeing with Aaron.

  3. I've been loving all your entries - this is the sort of thing that I hope is still accessible 20 years from now when I want to understand what the hell happened in the 00s.

I don't recall seeing an entry for Facebook so I'll go with that. And...Obama? And/or Bush?

  4. I too have enjoyed this very much and I hope you have plans to preserve it somehow (is there a book compilation on the way?)

Bush/Obama are good guesses, as is Facebook. I also don't think Fox News has found its spot on the list yet, although perhaps the Fake News entry was enough! Like it or not, Fox has definitely shaped the decade.

  5. #1 - Black POTUS

#2 is trickier. I was kind of hoping it wouldn't be political, but WMDs/Bush sure makes sense. Or maybe franchise movies. Perhaps the blog (how meta!).

  6. No one got it quite right, as you can see. Though those guessing Facebook were very astute. I just couldn't bear to write about W. And as for Obama, I already was covered by the Shepard Fairey poster entry. I think of our current President more as a landmark of the next decade actually. His inauguration was the psychic end to the aughts, even if they only officially ended tonight.

  7. My guess: Hipsters for #2, Facebook for #1. But I coud be wrong...

  8. great blog though I'm surprised to see "hipsters" at #2. I'm actually surprised to see it in the top 10, but I'm too old & probably out of touch so...

I think Facebook is a good choice for #1. I want to say that it should be 9/11 because it changed so much, but since it has an actual date 9/11/01, people won't be saying "wait, when did that happen?" Facebook will eventually die-off and it will need to be remembered as a child of the aughts.

As for the rest of the top 10 -- shake 'em up and let them fall out in any order and you're probably not going to be wrong.

  9. This is so cool! Excited to see you starting to do stuff like this. I’m still just a hack, of course, but I learn so much when I get the chance to tag along when you’re shooting. Plus with your knowledge of photographing Viet Nam, this should be an amazing trip for people.
